Hi! My name is Britney Gibson. My journey as an artist has been one of transformation, marked by both profound loss and the power of resiliency and healing. I graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design in 2014. My artistic expression has evolved beyond the digital realm to the meticulous process of stipple drawing. Through the painstaking application of countless dots, I strive to capture the delicate balance of life through a variety of subjects. My initial adventure into the art world was based on the structured principles of graphic design. I was drawn to the visual communication, and the power of imagery to convey meaning. This foundation gave me a deep understanding of composition, form, and the interplay of light and shadow. These principles, though learned in a digital context, have become essential to my current artistic practice.
The trajectory of my life, and consequently my art, took a significant turn with the loss of my newborn son, Colton, in 2016. This tragedy reshaped my perspective, forcing me to confront the fragility of life and the depths of grief. This led me to give up a career as a graphic designer to pursue a career in nursing. Driven to pay our experience forward, I had a desire to help other families, and their children navigate through difficult health journeys. As I was still in the midst of my own grieving journey, caring so strongly for others began to cause my mental health to take a toll. In the midst of this darkness, I found relief in the way of creation. Art became more than just a form of expression; it became a lifeline, a way to process my emotions, and a means of finding light in the darkness. The repetitive, meditative nature of stippling offered a sense of calm during the storm of grief. The act of creating, and bringing something beautiful into the world, became a way for me to find meaning in the face of unimaginable loss. Just as I care for my patients with tenderness and attention, I approach my art with the same level of care and dedication.
My stipple drawings are more than just representations of nature; they are expressions of my personal journey. The process of building an image dot by dot mirrors the gradual process of healing and rebuilding after loss. Each piece, whether a commissioned portrait of a beloved companion or a study of the natural world, is created with compassion and care. In the delicate act of layering dot upon dot, I find a sense of peace, a way to channel grief into something tangible and beautiful. My art is not just about capturing the likeness of a subject; it's about preserving a memory, celebrating a life, and finding peace in the details of the world around us. It is a testament to the enduring power of love, the healing potential and resiliency of art. Just as the countless dots come together to form a complete image, the experiences of our lives, both joyful and painful, contribute to our being, shaping us into the individuals we are meant to be.
